TAAHLIAH
Hailing from Glasgow, TAAHLIAH came to music production quickly after starting to DJ. Driven by her dissatisfaction with the music she was hearing at parties, she started creating her own edits; layering warped vocals atop hard dance tracks and morphing mainstream pop tunes into experimental club-ready anthems.
Her original productions finally took centre-stage with the release of her mini-album Angelica in the summer of 2021 via London label untitled (recs) which went on to win Best Independent EP/Mixtape at the AIM Awards. In 2022, TAAHLIAH released a trilogy of singles further establishing her artistic freedom. From the pounding hard dance of Bodies featuring Luca Eck to the anthemic pop song Fall Into Place toplined by vocalist Tsatsamis, via her facetious IDM collaboration with Loraine James Fuck It!
In October 2024, TAAHLIAH released her much-anticipated debut-album Gramarye via her longterm label partner untitled (recs) following singles ‘Boys,’ ‘2018’ and ‘Cherish’. The LP includes invaluable contributions from Dev Hynes aka Blood Orange, and TAAHLIAH lending her own vocals to her music for the first time. The AIM Award nominated album is TAAHLIAH’s boldest statement yet – from the sensitive confessional writing, to the sharp dance cuts that embody the unbothered confidence of her wild club sets, this debut bares all sides of its creator.
Crystallising a new dawn in electronic music, TAAHLIAH constantly seems to challenge the idea that fun and experimental are antonyms. Nothing expresses that better than her viral Boiler Room where mainstream EDM & the sharpest edge of contemporary electronic music cohabit on a tracklist that reads like a manifesto for dance music’s future.
This unrestrained approach permeates all areas of TAAHLIAH’s career including her choice of live performances. She has sold out the institutional Southbank Centre for a one-off collaboration with the London Contemporary Orchestra, as well as playing European clubbing flagships such as Fabric, Razzmatazz, Dour Festival or popular music havens like Glastonbury Festival or Sziget. TAAHLIAH’s ecstatic DJ sets have taken her around the globe with sold out shows in the USA, Australia, and South Korea.
Beyond her career as a prominent DJ & producer, TAAHLIAH is a personality to be reckoned with as she proves weekly on her podcast The Dolls Discuss co-hosted with her friend Lourdes or the few times where she has sat in for Mary Anne Hobbes on BBC 6 Music.
Gramarye
The debut album from Glasgow-based producer TAAHLIAH is the kind of record she would have spun in her room as a teenager, and it aims to be that for the listener. With just glimpses of the slick and sexy dance music she’s become known for, it’s a bold step into weightless balladry and classic pop songwriting.
The record releases on untitled (recs), who have partnered with TAAHLIAH since her very first single, ‘Brave’. Following the AIM award-winning EP Angelica, Gramarye is a vulnerable and confessional offering that sees TAAHLIAH sing on record for the first time. “I always knew this record would somehow inhabit my emotions,” she says. “Angelica was about my body, whereas Gramarye is about my mind.”
Made with a close-knit group of collaborators, including naafi, Tsatsamis, Fred MacPherson, and Dev Hynes (aka Blood Orange), the record combines the acoustic and the synthetic to create a palette that lives up to its otherworldly title.
Despite touring constantly (including appearances at Glastonbury and sets in New York, Seoul, and Melbourne), TAAHLIAH found herself more inspired by bands and singers than the dance music around her. You’ll catch references to Title Fight, Purity Ring, ANOHNI, Frou Frou, and Caroline Polachek.
Shaped in part by her experience collaborating with the London Contemporary Orchestra, the record is TAAHLIAH’s boldest statement so far. From the confident kick thump of ‘Boys’ to the sensitive confessional writing on ‘Holding On / Let Me Go’, this debut bares all sides of its creator.
