Cloth
Glasgow-based twin sibling duo Rachael and Paul Swinton sounded like few around them when Cloth released their 2019 self-titled debut. The 2023 follow-up ‘Secret Measure’ expanded their sound with more layers, more interplay and gutsier writing. Receiving critical acclaim from the likes of The Guardian, Pitchfork, CLASH and Uncut, it was shortlisted for the Scottish Album of the Year (SAY) Award. Third album ‘Pink Silence’ is the sound of Cloth realising the growing pop streak they’ve long-threatened to bring to the fore, full of the kind of rewarding ruminations that continue to make them one of today’s most exciting bands.
Pink Silence
On ‘Pink Silence’, Cloth explore the loss of friendship and the trappings of self-improvement. The pair’s feather-light approach and intrinsic quiet drama remain fundamentals of the Cloth sound on the album, but with producer Ali Chant at the helm - and with a cast of collaborators that includes Portishead’s Adrian Utley, Owen Pallett, and Mogwai’s Stuart Braithwaite - their exemplary guitar interplay is adorned with synth flourishes, undulating drone textures, and strings. At the centre is a love and appreciation for pop melodies and big choruses, and the record is at once the most delicate and abrasive thing they have made.
