Delivering angular alt-rock with deep electronic grooves, Cloth are twins Rachael and Paul Swinton. Influenced by Cocteau Twins and The XX, Cloth began performing together in 2018. They immersed themselves in the Scottish music scene after moving to Glasgow to study and quickly found themselves playing in local bands and gigging all the usual local spots that a bustling and influential Glasgow scene has to offer. Their debut self-titled album from 2019 was released to critical acclaim making the SAY Award Shortlist and was named as a “Tip for 2020” by BBC Radio’s Huw Stephens. Following playing with Arab Strap and The Twilight Sad at their sell-out Barrowland shows, Cloth signed to Mogwai’s legendary label, Rock Action Records.
‘Secret Measure’ finds Cloth expanding their creative circle for the first time, turning their tried-and-tested insular working process on its head by collaborating with Bristol producer Ali Chant. The duo’s debut LP dealt with disparate and often ambiguous lyrical themes; ‘Secret Measure’ is immediately more forthright. Centred around a desire for personal assurances, the album’s narrative reflects on Paul’s realisation that even as bleak as things get you can always find a flash of hope to hold on to if you look hard enough. Indicative of the musical bond that sits at the core of Cloth, Rachael trusted in the themes that Paul was exploring throughout the album, finding ways to impart her own experiences on the songs throughout the process.
